چکیده

Nano-sized particles of ceria with high surface area were processed by solution combustion synthesis (SCS) and their catalytic activity towards combustion of carbonaceous materials was compared with that obtained by simple thermal decomposition of cerium nitrate, exhibiting the same specific surface area. These two kinds of ceria powders were tested, by DTA and temperature programmed combustion of diesel soot and a commercial carbon. Ceria processed by SCS was found to be more active than its counter part since it could decrease significantly both combustion activation energy (from 115 to 111 kcal/mol) and TPC-plot peak temperature (from 466 to 405 °C) of diesel soot. The mechanism of the catalytic reaction of combustion was investigated by TPD/R experiments. Likewise other combustion catalysts acting as oxygen pumps, also ceria can exchange limited amounts of oxygen even below 300°C, the SCS-synthesized one showing a superior O2 release at low temperatures (≤ 450°C). Finally, the effect of specific aging protocols (thermal treatment at 600°C for 96 hours) in the presence of potentially deactivating species present in diesel exhaust gases (SO2 and water), was also studied showing that the here proposed materials suffers from less significant ageing than Ce(NO3)3-derived ceria.

CeO2-based catalysts with engineered morphologies for soot oxidation to enhance soot-catalyst contact

AS MORPHOLOGY PLAYS A RELEVANT ROLE IN SOLID/SOLID CATALYSIS, WHERE THE NUMBER OF CONTACT POINTS IS A CRITICAL FEATURE IN THIS KIND OF REACTION, THREE DIFFERENT CERIA MORPHOLOGIES HAVE BEEN INVESTIGATED IN THIS WORK AS SOOT OXIDATION CATALYSTS: ceria nanofibers, which can become organized as a catalytic network inside diesel particulate filter channels and thus trap soot particles at several co...

Soot Combustion over Nanostructured Ceria with Different Morphologies

In this study, nano-structure ceria with three different morphologies (nanorod, nanoparticle and flake) have been prepared by hydrothermal and solvothermal methods. The ceria samples were deeply characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, H2-TPR, XPS and in-situ DRIFTS, and tested for soot combustion in absence/presence NO atmospheres under loose and tight contact conditions. The prepared ceria samples exh...

Recent developments in laser-induced incandescence (LII) for soot diagnostics in high-pressure laminar flames and engine-like Diesel combustion

The analysis of soot formation and oxidation is essential for Diesel engine development to meet future pollutant emission reduction requirements. In recent years laser-induced incandescence (LII) has developed to a powerful tool for soot diagnostics in flames, even in the challenging environment of Diesel combustion. This work presents some recent applications of LII for soot particle sizing in...
